To determine if something is digital or analog, examine what form it is being sent in. If something is digital, it is sent using numbers and is called data. If something is analog, it is sent using pulsating waves and is called signals.

3 Example of analog communication

  • English Language Spoken Verbally In-Person

The English language being spoken verbally in-person is analog because when you talk, you make noises that are created by your vocal cords using soundwaves.

  • Traditional Radio

Traditional Radio is analog because it transmits soundwaves.

  • A phone call on a landline phone that transmits signals through copper wire

A landline phone call through copper wire is analog because it transmits an electric signal through the wire that matches the soundwave signal created by the person speaking on the phone.

3 Examples of digital communication

  • Email

Email is digital because it is messages sent through the internet which requires it to be in a data format.

  • Texting

Texting is digital because in order to send a text, the message has to be converted into binary so that it can be sent over a cellular network.

  • A phone call on a smartphone that transmits data through cellular networks

A phone call on a smartphone is digital because it converts the soundwaves made by speaking into the phone and converts the soundwaves into binary so the data can be sent over a cellular network.
